Gulmarg – The Meadow of Flowers, Kashmir
Gulmarg, meaning “Meadow of Flowers” in Persian, is one of the most stunning hill stations in Jammu & Kashmir, located about 50 kilometers from Srinagar at an altitude of around 8,700 feet (2,650 meters) above sea level. Surrounded by snow-clad mountains, lush forests of pine and fir, and colorful wildflower meadows, Gulmarg has long been known as the crown jewel of Kashmir tourism.
Ancient and Medieval History
Gulmarg’s origins date back to the 16th century when it was discovered by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak, the ruler of Kashmir, who was captivated by its natural beauty and gave it the name Gulmarg. The name perfectly describes the place—“Gul” meaning flowers and “Marg” meaning meadow.
During the Mughal era, Emperor Jahangir frequently visited Gulmarg with his beloved queen Nur Jahan. The emperor was so enchanted by its beauty that he reportedly collected 21 different varieties of wildflowers from the meadows. The Mughals often used Gulmarg as a summer retreat and hunting ground, leaving behind traces of their presence in the region’s architecture and garden traditions.
Colonial Era and Modern Development
In the British colonial period, Gulmarg became a popular summer resort for British officials stationed in India. They introduced golf and skiing, transforming Gulmarg into one of India’s earliest mountain recreation centers. The Gulmarg Golf Course, established in 1890, remains one of the highest golf courses in the world.
After India’s independence, Gulmarg was developed as a premier hill station and winter sports destination. It gained international fame with the establishment of the Gulmarg Ski Resort and later, the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars, reaching an altitude of nearly 13,400 feet (4,000 meters) on Mount Apharwat.
