Lake Pichola, Udaipur – The Heart of the City of Lakes
Lake Pichola is one of the most enchanting and oldest artificial lakes in Udaipur, Rajasthan, built in 1362 AD by a local Banjara tribesman named Pichhu Banjara, during the reign of Maharana Lakha. Later, Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur, enlarged the lake after establishing the city along its banks in 1559. Today, it stands as the symbolic heart of Udaipur, often called “The Venice of the East.”
Historical Significance
Originally created to meet the water needs of the surrounding areas, Lake Pichola soon became a centerpiece of Udaipur’s royal charm. The Mewar rulers built several palaces, temples, and ghats around the lake, transforming it into a picture of royal beauty and cultural heritage.
The most famous among these is the Lake Palace (Jag Niwas)—now a luxury hotel—built by Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1743–1746 on an island in the middle of the lake. The Jag Mandir Palace, another island palace, was used as a summer retreat and even gave shelter to Mughal Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) during his rebellion against his father, Emperor Jahangir.

Surrounded by majestic hills, ancient temples, and heritage buildings, Lake Pichola spans about 4 kilometers in length and 3 kilometers in width. Its four main islands—Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir, and Arsi Vilas—each hold historical and architectural importance:
- Jag Niwas: Home to the iconic Lake Palace Hotel.
- Jag Mandir: Known for its impressive marble architecture and lush gardens.
- Mohan Mandir: Built by Jagat Singh between 1628–1652; used by kings to watch traditional processions.
- Arsi Vilas: A small island and bird sanctuary, once a retreat for the Maharanas.
The lake is connected to other nearby lakes, such as Fateh Sagar Lake and Swarna Sagar Lake, through canals, creating a unique network of water bodies that enhance Udaipur’s charm.
